Carbonates are the second largest category of soft drinks in Bulgaria, after the botlled waters.
The category cacovers products from colas, lemonade, orange, tonic & bitter, lemon & lime, flavoured waters and many other fruit and non-fruit flavours.
In 1990 all carbonated drinks in Bulgaria were made with sugar. In 2015 the share of carbonates with added sugar was 14.4%, and in 2005 it was 45%.
More than 3/4L of the carbonated drinks are low or no calorie.
The factor common to all carbonated drinks is they contain carbon dioxide to make them fizzy.
They have been in existence since the late eighteenth century, when Dr Joseph Priestley discovered a means of artificially carbonating water.
Carbonated drinks are very popular throughout the world. In many drinks, the carbonation is used to give "bite" to the flavour.
There are no known health effects of carbonated drinks.
